Did you know...
...Twenty-three years after the dramatic Operation Moses brought the first mass Ethiopian Jewish aliyah home to Israel, the State's 105,000 Ethiopians are a community in crisis. The centuries-old dream of coming to Jerusalem has turned into a nightmare of high juvenile crime and school drop out rates, rampant unemployment and domestic violence.
SHATIL's Assistance to Ethiopian Immigrants Project:
• Trains and coordinates Yachdav (Together,) a coalition of Ethiopian women who broke a taboo and banded together to address the rising rates of wife- murder and other forms of violence in the community. The Coalition is working to raise awareness both in and outside the community and pushing for policy changes to deal with the problem at its roots.
• Helps local Ethiopian communities gain influence and trains Ethiopian Israelis with leadership potential in deciding on and monitoring the programs implemented in their communities.
• Works closely with elected leaders of the national Ethiopian Students' Union. Shatil provides them with organizational, fundraising, advocacy and media tools to advance their causes.
