SHATIL Achievements

Over these 25 years, Shatil has been instrumental in creating real social change on behalf of all Israelis. Shatil's numerous achievements include the enactment of the Victims' Rights legislation; the Cellular Antenna Law, which requires cellular phone companies to publicly disclose the locations of new antennas and the winning of a petition by the Coalition for the Right to Open Pastures, to graze sheep in pastures which had been sealed off, saving the sheep from slaughter and the loss of livelihood of hundreds of Negev farmers.

In 2007, Shatil:

• Opened a new satellite office in Rosh Pina in order to bridge the gaps exacerbated by the Second Lebanon War in the Northern Periphery.

• Launched a new track for social activists in coordination with the M.A. program in Sociology and Anthropology at Tel Aviv University- the first of its kind in the world!

• Published the findings of a 100-page survey to better understand the reasons behind exceptionally drop-out statistics of immigrant teens.

• Facilitated a huge increase in Russian-language media exposure for social change organizations and Shatil. Some 400 articles appeared in print, television, the Internet and radio this year alone!

Demonstration Calling on the Government to Take Action Regarding the Poor Absorption of Ethiopian Immigrants that resulted in government action. Shatil consulted to the group of young people who planned and followed up on the demonstration.

In 2006, Shatil

• Led a successful campaign on behalf of FSU immigrants in Beer Sheva whose homes were falling apart due to faulty construction. The campaign resulted in repairs by the builder according to the demands of the residents.

• Opened a new office in the Triangle area to promote Israeli-Arab civil society in this weakened region

• Took on the taboo issue of Domestic Violence in the Ethiopian Community by assisting in the formation of and coordinating the Coalition to Address Ethiopian Domestic Violence.

• Provided assistance to the Housing Forum of Ramle/Lod in successfully petitioning the Israeli courts to resume bussing to school for the village's children after Lod's mayor halted services.

Volunteer Workdays have built and/or renovated children's play areas in four Ramle and Lod neighborhoods and in Jaffa's Arab Democratic School.

• Initiated Volunteer Workdays in which volunteers built and renovated children's play areas in four Ramle and Lod neighborhoods and in Jaffa's Arab Democratic School.

• Assisted with preparation and on-site organization of a demonstration protesting the lack of government efforts on behalf of Ethiopian immigrants which led to the establishment of an inter-ministerial committee which made specific recommendations for proper absorption (higher mortgage loans, hiring academic experts to work in government ministries, budget allocations for neighborhoods).

• Collaborated with environmental and human rights organizations, in publishing a high-profile report on environmental hazards relating to the hazardous chemical explosion at the Ramat Hovav factory site and its impact on the unrecognized Bedouin village of Wadi Na'am.
